  • What is the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)?

The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) collects information at hundreds of four-year colleges and universities about first-year and senior students' participation in programs and activities that institutions provide for their learning and personal development. The results provide an estimate of how undergraduates spend their time and what they gain from attending college.

NSSE focuses on key aspects of the undergraduate experience, helping institutions understand how students engage with their learning environment. Universities use these insights to enhance academic programs, student services, and overall campus life.

  • Who can participate?

NSSE is offered to first-year and senior undergraduate students at participating institutions. If you received an invitation, you are part of a selected group whose insights will help shape future improvements at our university.

  • How do I complete the survey?

Search your University of Miami email account for the keyword “NSSE” on or after Thursday, March 26. Links can also be found through your Blackboard account.  If you are included in the survey sample, you will have received an email invitation from NSSE containing a link to complete the survey online. Please also check your spam folder, just in case it has been filtered out of your inbox.

  • Are there any incentives?

Have a cup of coffee on us! Complete the survey by Monday, May 11, 2026, and receive five (5) Dining Dollars credited to your Cane Card. Incentives will be delivered on or around:

    • Tuesday, April 7, 2026
    • Thursday, April 23, 2026
    • Tuesday, May 12, 2026

  • How long will it take?

Most students complete NSSE in about 15 minutes. You can complete it in one sitting or return to the survey later if needed by using your unique link. The survey can be completed on any device— tablet, laptop or smartphone!

  • When is the survey happening?

The survey administration period begins Thursday, March 26. Eligible students will receive an official email invitation from NSSE with a link to participate.  Students who have not yet completed the survey will continue to receive three (3) reminder emails on April 1, 7, and 13. A final reminder will be sent on Thursday, April 23, 2026.

  • Why should I take part?

Your input truly matters. By participating, you’re helping shape your educational experience—sharing what’s working well and highlighting areas that could be improved. It’s your opportunity to make your voice heard.

  • If I have received an invitation, am I obliged to complete the survey?

Completion of the survey is entirely voluntary, and there will be no consequences if you choose not to participate.

  • Will my responses be kept confidential?

Yes, your responses will be kept confidential within the university, although they are not anonymous. Only the aggregated data will be shared with university decision makers.

  • How can I find out more about NSSE and how past results have been used?
